Innovations in End-of-Life Care
an international journal of leaders in end-of-life care

Kristen Turner, MB BS FAChPM

Dr. Turner has a longstanding interest in education and training in palliative medicine. She began her work in palliative care in 1985 at the Calvary Hospital Kogarah in New South Wales, Australia. In 1986 she started her own residency training program, becoming the first Sidney Institute of Palliative Medicine (SIPM) registrar. She also trained for 12 months with Drs. Robert Twycross and Geoffrey Hanks in the United Kingdom. Dr. Turner was the first director of the Central Sydney Area Community Palliative Care Service and then director of the Palliative Care Unit at Lottie Stewart Hospital in Western Sydney. She developed and supervised the first community palliative care registrar training position within SIPM, where she is currently coordinator of training. In 1992, as a consultant in palliative care policy/planning for the New South Wales Health Department, she spent two years developing a framework of policy and service provision. In recent years, she developed an interest in palliative medicine in the rural sector and has traveled to rural centers to provide consultations and education.
