How to get PDP's (Professional Development Points)
Participants will be eligible to receive Massachusetts Professional
Development Points (PDP’s) by attending workshops and submitting
a reflective assignment following the workshop. Below you will find
the PDP assignment for each workshop. They are organized chronologically
by date, with the most recent workshop first.
The deadline to submit PDP assignments is two weeks after the end of
the workshop. After the deadline, PDP assignments will not be accepted.
PDP assignments should be returned to Helen Lebowitz at EDC, 55 Chapel
Street (MLT), Newton, MA 02458, or by fax at (617) 969 – 1527
or by e-mail at hlebowitz@edc.org.
Date of Workshop: May 21, 2003
PDP Assignment due date: June 20, 2003
# of PDP's: 21 (Cohort 1, also completed Dec. and March assignments)
# of PDP's: 14 (Cohort 1, also completed Dec. or March assignment)
# of PDP's: 10 (Cohort 2, will also complete Fall assignment)
Assignment: Write a 1 – 2 page reflection that addresses some
or all of the following questions:
1. What was the Case discussion like for you during the math session?
Did it help you to focus on what students are thinking? What did you
take away from that session?
2. For whichever lens you read about (curriculum developer or researcher),
what struck you about the article and what might you do differently
going forward?
3. What was it like to present your lesson to teachers from other schools?
And how did you find being in the audience for other teachers' presentations?
What did you get out of this exchange of ideas?

PDP Assignment due date: March 14, 2003

Note: A letter certifying your PDPs will be sent out after the third
workshop on May 21, 2003
Assignment: Write a 1 – 2 page reflection that addresses some
or all of the following questions:
1. Is your group different today from where they were at the start of
the first cycle in August? Discuss the changes in your group’s
dynamic, the group’s goals and/or the group’s understanding
of lesson study.
2. What is your impression of the Open-Approach to Mathematics presented
at this workshop and what do you think you and/or your group will do
with this strategy to teaching mathematics?
3. Based on the conversations you had during the Team Consultation session,
how do the challenges of other teams compare to the challenges your
team is facing? Do you see similarities or differences and why might
this be?

PDP Assignment due date: February 28, 2003
# of PDP’s: 14 (Cohort 2)
Assignment: Write a 1 – 2 page reflection that addresses the following
questions:
1. What are your initial impressions of Lesson Study?
2. Where is your lesson study group right now in the lesson study process?
3. In which stages of lesson study do you anticipate needing the most
support?
4. What are some key issues in your school that need to be considered
around lesson study implementation?

# of PDP’s: 21 (Cohort 1, will also complete March and May assignments)
# of PDP’s: 14 (Cohort 1, will also complete March or May assignment)

1. Think back to August…was your first cycle of lesson study what
you expected it to be? How did it meet your expectations? And where
did it fall short?
2. What do you hope to do differently during this next cycle of lesson
study?
3. What advice would you give to a group of teachers just beginning
lesson study?
