The mentoring training is organized in five sessions, two before mentors begin with students, and three more spread throughout the year. We believe that having follow-up sessions throughout the year will be advantageous for mentors, since the experience they will bring to each session will make for productive and useful learning. Sessions 1 and 2 focus on Number and Operation in grades K-5, Patterns and Functions in grades 6-8, and Algebra in grades 8-9. They feature active engagement with mentoring materials, simulations of mentoring sessions, the use of case discussion to understand and learn to manage common mentoring dilemmas, and time to prepare for the practical and logistical aspects of the mentoring process. Sessions 3-5, occurring after mentors have begun their work with students, will introduce the materials for other content strands and help mentors to deal with challenges that have arisen in their first months of mentoring. Videotapes were developed for use in training sessions, and will be available
soon. |
