Assigning Scores

Two common ways of using a rubric are described below:

Holistic Rubrics Analytic Rubrics

Teachers give one score for the task and one score for each student.

Using a rubric in this way may make it quicker to score than an analytic rubric. Teachers can quickly get a general read on how the class is doing.

Teachers give one score per criteria. Students get multiple scores for one assessment task.

Using a rubric in this way allows teachers to more carefully pinpoint a student’s strengths and weaknesses and to provide more specific feedback to students.
