Hot Topic: Improving Students’ Achievement in Mathematics

Check out the fall issue of American Educator which includes a new article by Deborah Ball, Heather Hill, and Hyman Bass, which links teachers' mathematical knowledge for teaching to student achievement in mathematics. While there is much debate about what knowledge teachers need to teach mathematics effectively, the authors suggest that mathematics content knowledge is not enough and that there is specialized knowledge for teaching.
