Description
MathScape is an innovative, NSF-funded middle school
curriculum that focuses on mathematics in the human experience. Students
explore essential mathematical concepts, processes, and skills through projects and
investigations, such as designing a house, forecasting population growth, and creating a
number system. Students experience mathematics as is it is used in activities that
are fundamental to human endeavors in order to see the world mathematically and to think
mathematically.
Design Tenets:
- Present math in meaningful and engaging contexts -- math is part of the human
experience.
- Provide mathematics content for the 21st century.
- Offer in-depth investigations of mathematics versus "exposure".
- Address the needs and interests of middle school students.
- Be accessible so that students at different levels can have success.
- Support teachers in their classrooms and in their professional development.
- Create a community of mathematics learners in the classroom.
About the Program:
The MathScape materials are designed to help teachers create an inviting,
exploratory classroom in which all students gain mathematical power.
- The curriculum consists of 21 units, 7 units at each
grade level (grades 6-8).
- Each unit includes a Teacher's Guide, a Student Guide and a materials kit.
- The Teacher's Guides provide detailed lesson plans, mathematical background information,
homework options, suggestions from field test teachers and sample student work.
- The program offers a variety of integrated assessment activities, including performance
tasks, quizzes, and projects.
- The program may be used as a complete curriculum or as "replacement" or
"transition" units
