Day for Phase 4: Build a Web Site
After four
investigation sessions, the ScienceQuest team had collected information
about building requirements to protect from earthquakes. They had spoken
to a construction expert, visited an engineering exhibit at a local
museum, collected information from the Internet, watched a video, and
built a model building. Each team member had kept a journal with information
they learned. Two of them had used an Alpha Smart to take notes while
on the field trips. The coach took a picture of the building model to
put on the web site.
The coach
had each team member take charge of a web page that focused on a particular
topic. Each team member designed their page on large chart paper with
crayons, markers, and pens. Looking through their notes, they decided
what information was most important and what they needed to include,
so that others would understand the importance of building safely. They
used the notes, that they had kept in their journals throughout the
project, to produce the text for their page. In the middle of their
designing session, they took a break to talk about the checklist for
easy-to-read and engaging Web sites. This included choosing a background
color, building appropriate links, choosing text font and size, using
at least one graphic, and putting all text into their own words. For
their next meeting, they planned to transfer their information into
the computer.
