ScienceQuest National Expansion Training

April 1, 2002

About ScienceQuest

ScienceQuest is an after school program, where kids between 10 and 14 years old engage in exciting, science and technology explorations in Community Technology Centers (CTC). ScienceQuest staff will train CTC staff and volunteers to run 10- to 15-week projects with small groups of young adolescents that culminate in a team-developed web site showing off what the team has learned.

ScienceQuest was launched in the Boston area during the spring of 2001 and has worked in eight cities in Massachusetts with twenty CTC's. Over 250 kids - girls and boys, kids with and without disabilities, representing many races and ethnicities, and of all academic abilities - have participated.

The National Launch

In conjunction with the CTCNet National Conference in Austin, TX, ScienceQuest is inviting teams of CTC staff and/ or volunteers to be part of our national launch. We will be selecting up to fifteen teams to start ScienceQuest projects in their communities across the country. We will accept applications to participate in six months of support starting with a one-day training program, which is being offered to CTCNet Affiliates for free.

Who are we looking for?

  • We are looking for enthusiasm and for excitement about the learning possible through the ScienceQuest approach to after school projects.
  • Teams - between 2 and 5 people - can be from the same or partner organizations, from the same city or region, or a combination. Teams have a commitment to work together on ScienceQuest.
  • We will select CTC's that represent a range of types of organizations, serve diverse communities and that reflect both small and large program types. Drop-in programs are just as welcome as those who already have formal after school programs.
  • Programs that are selected should be ready to sign an agreement that reflects their commitment to run ScienceQuest during the summer, 2002 and fall, 2002.
