My name is Caitlin Feeley, and I'm an AmeriCorps VISTA. I currently work on ScienceQuest, an after-school science learning project that targets young adolescents. ScienceQuest gives kids an informal introduction to science and technology, and encourages kids to develop questions about topics that are important and interesting to them. With the help of an adult coach, the ScienceQuest team researches their question and publish their findings on a website.

I've already coached two ScienceQuest teams at a local public school, and am currently looking for a location to coach a third team. I just finished working with a great group of enthusiastic kids who love learning about the internet, building their own bubble-powered rockets, and figuring out answers to their questions. It's amazing to see kids light up as they figure out how to solve problems and create things themselves.

When I'm not coaching, I do support work for ScienceQuest at EDC, where the project is based. For instance, currently I'm handling a digital video project and maintaining the ScienceQuest website. I also designed our new Youth Site, which includes links to various team websites. Like most VISTAs, I wear a lot of hats, so on any given day I might do some of the following:

  • Provide technical assistance to ScienceQuest coaches
  • Create and edit print graphics; prepare materials and arrange for printing
  • Handle data entry and maintain records for program contacts, survey results, etc.
  • Research, budget, and procure necessary equipment and materials, such as digital video lighting, instructional literature, and promotional T-shirts.
  • Work with service providers, such as conference-call services, printers, and caterers.
  • Correspond with coaches, program directors, and other ScienceQuest partners.
  • Shoot, view, and/or log digital video.
  • Edit digital video using Final Cut Pro.
  • Update, edit, and maintain our website.
  • Create new web pages, web graphics, and content.
  • Write and/or edit documents, such as correspondence, recruitment materials, and instructional literature.
  • Moderate ScienceQuest listserv.
  • Coach ScienceQuest team, including researching topics and activities for group & obtaining materials.

One of the great things about being a VISTA is that you do something new every day! It might sound trite, but it's true - I'm excited to go to work when I get up in the morning. AmeriCorps isn't always easy, but it's always rewarding.
