Content Abstract
This synthesis is a publication of the Urban Education Monograph Series, a new initiative of the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (NCREL) that works to connect practitioners and policymakers to important research and promising practices. The author of this synthesis asserts that it is important to allow different conceptions of multicultural education to be expressed in the school decision-making process rather than to insist on one definition. These conceptions are guidelines for action and need to be clearly understood early in the process of making educational decisions. Accordingly, this synthesis includes various conceptions and definitions of multicultural education and outlines the implications of these definitions for practice. Practical approaches toward multicultural education are offered, along with key principles, effects, and implications of multicultural education. These areas are outlined assuming three needs for multicultural education; (1) the social realities of U.S. society (2) the influence of culture and ethnicity on human growth and development, and (3) the conditions of effective teaching and learning. Methodological Notes
Additional Comments
This synthesis provides a strong and comprehensive case for multicultural education, yet the text is concise, well organized, and easy-to-read. The organization of this synthesis is one of its greatest strengths. The author begins by defining multicultural education, then outlining the needs for multicultural education, followed by a discussion of social reform, approaches to and effects of multicultural education, and concluding with reform implications.
