Content Abstract

This book is about a small local agency, Options in Community Living, in Madison, Wisconsin. They see their central task as supporting people in their own place rather than supervising and training people for readiness to live independently.

This book includes three perspectives on Options’ work, each in its own voice. 1) There is an essay in eight chapters that describes and analyzes Options from the point of view of interested outsiders. 2) There are stories and a few pictures created by Options’ staff as they have reflected on their work. 3) There is a set of policies and other papers that document Options as an organization. (excerpt from introduction)

Methodological Notes

Additional Comments

The stories about the people who are supported by Options are wonderful and moving. They provide insightful and important glimpses into the lives of adults with disabilities who are living independently. The books also provides a nice, and at times detailed, look at how Options functions and the role that staff play in the lives of the people they serve.
