Content Abstract

The effects of an inclusion program in Grades 2 to 5 were examined in a three-part study focusing, respectively, on the academic and affective outcomes of fifth-grade students who were normally achieving (NA) or showed specific learning disabilities (SLD); teacher and parent perceptions of SLD and NA students’ growth in an inclusion context for Grades 2 to 4; and an analysis of anecdotal records. Findings suggested that students with SLD made some academic and affective gains at a pace comparable to that of NA students; parent and teacher surveys indicated improved self-esteem in students with SLD, and, in some cases, improved motivation. Anecdotal data suggested reduced stigma for students with SLD. (abstract from article)

Reviews and Commentary by the Field

I AM A SPECIAL EDUCATOR IN BALTIMORE CITY SCHOOL SYSTEM. I HAVE NOT YET HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO READ THE ARTICLE. BUT AFTER READING THE ABSTRACT I FEEL THIS MAY BE TRUE FOR SLD STUDENTS BUT, WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU BEGIN TO INCLUDE SLE AND SED STUDENTS INTO THE CLASSROOM? I ALSO FEEL THAT IN MY SCHOOL SYSTEM THAT WE ARE INCLUDING STUDENTS NOT FOR THE SUCCESS OF THE STUDENT BUT FOR THE SCHOOL SYSTEM IMAGE. IS THE FOCUS INCLUSION OR IS THE FOCUS ACHEIVEMENT? THANK YOU.

MY NAME IS PATRICIA MCCOMBS AND I HAVE BEEN TEACHING LD IN A SELF- CONTAINED CLASSROOM FOR MANY YEARS. THE LAST TWO YEARS I DECIDED TO MAINSTREAM MY STUDENTS FOR GYM, MUSIC, SCIENCE(WITH ASSISTANCE) AND COMPUTER. I TRIED SOME MATH CLASSES BUT MY STUDENTS HAD PROBLEMS BECAUSE OF THEIR READING, SO THEY COULD NOT KEEP UP . I FEEL THAT GOOD INTENTIONS ARE OFTEN MET WITH STRONG RESISTANCE BY REGULAR TEACHERS WHO DO NOT WANT TO TAKE THE TIME OR DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE NEEDS OF THESE STUDENTS. MORE SHOULD BE DONE ON FOCUSING HOW TO BETTER TEACH THESE CHILDREN WHILE MAKING THEM FEEL INCLUDED. IT SHOULD ALSO BE DECIDED BY THE SPECIAL TEACHER WHO MAY BETTER WORK WITH HIS OR HER STUDENTS. MANY TIMES I FIND THAT OTHER TEACHER’S PERSONALITY AND ATTITUDE HAS A GREAT BEARING ON HOW THESE CHILDREN LEARN.

MY NAME IS MELISSA MIRANDA AND I USED TO BE A TEACHER IN A SELF-CONTAINDED CLASSROOM. I ALWAYS BELIEVED IN MY STUDENTS AND WANTED THEM IN GENERAL EDUCATION CLASSROOMS. I AM CURRENTLY AN INCLUSION FACILITATOR FOR A FIRST AND SECOND GRADE CLASSROOM. THIS PROGRAM INCORPORATES TEAM TEACHING, AN INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT, A BEHAVIORAL SPECIALIST AND MYSELF. THIS IS OUR FIRST YEAR RUNNING THIS INCLUSION PROGRAM AND I AM THRILLED WITH IT! I BELIEVE THAT THE KEY TO THIS PROGRAM IS THE DEDICATION OF THE TEACHERS AND INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANTS THAT WORK HARD EVERYDAY IN THE EFFORTS FOR THE PROGRAM’S SUCCESS! ALTHOUGH I CAN NOT CONCLUDE AT THIS POINT THE OUTCOME OF THE PROGRAM, I HAVE RECEIVED POSITIVE RESPONSES FROM THE FAMILIES OF DISABLED AND NONDISABLED CHILDREN.
