Content Abstract

The IDEA – 97 requires that all students have access to the general education curriculum, and that they are to be included in state or district accountability testing. This pouts tremendous pressure on both general and special education teachers and administrators – now they must face the challenge of designing the curriculum so that all students can improve.

In Accessing the General Curriculum, Nolet and McLaughlin present a framework and strategies for all K-12 teachers in inclusive environments. The authors bring practical information and insight to this difficult subject, making it easier to design introduction that enables all students to access and make progress in the general curriculum. It also helps teachers, administrators, and curriculum development specialists design measures that can be used to assess the progress of disabled students, as well as develop effective collaborative relationships between general and special education instructors. Key topics include: aligning IDEA – 97 and standards-based reform; linking standards and curriculum; establishing three domains of knowledge for ensuring access to the curriculum; understanding the nature of curriculum; applying learning research to teaching; evaluating progress in the general curriculum; aligning the IEP with goals and objectives; universal design; and, creating conditions for access.

This pioneering text provides examples, illustrations, flowcharts, and other invaluable strategies to help educators align best practices, effective instruction, and higher-order thinking with the general education curriculum (abstract from book).
