Helen Frankenthaler

BIRTHDAY: December 12, 1928

ABOUT HER
An American abstract expressionist painter, Helen Frankenthaler rose to fame in her twenties with her new method of pouring paint directly onto the unprimed surface of the canvas, so the color of the paint soaked into the very canvas. This "stain painting" process enabled her to create silky diaphanous paintings that seemed to float in the air.

She also left large areas of the canvas blank, allowing the paintings "to breathe." She introduced the lyrical use of color abstract expressionism she is now known for.

The Guggenheim Museum in New York exhibited Helen Frankenthaler's work in an individual show in 1985 and the Museum of Modern Art in New York presented her retrospective in 1989.

Her work is admired for its beauty and power, and respected for its disregard of fashion.

QUOTE
"I''ve explored a variety of directions and themes over the years. But I think in my painting you can see the signature of one artist, the work of one wrist."
