Children’s Privacy Policy

Contact Information
The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act requires that children under the age of 13 secure parental consent before submitting personal information to any Web site. For students who participate in an EdEquity dialogue through a school or other group, we ask the teachers or organization coordinator to let us know the ages of the students, and we require parental consent forms for all students under the age of 13. Children under the age of 13 who subscribe to EdEquity directly are not permitted to participate in this listserv until we receive a signed and dated consent form from that child’s parent or legal guardian. If you are under the age of 13 and wish to subscribe to EdEquity, please contact the EdEquity moderator to have the form forwarded to you and your parents.

Type of Information Collected
We do not attempt to collect information about individual children who serve on EdEquity panels apart from their name and the name of the school or organization that is coordinating the group through which they are participating. However, if messages are sent to us from a child, forwarded to us, or if a child subscribes directly to EdEquity, we will also collect electronic mail addresses.

It is possible that during the course of normal correspondence between students and subscribers that children will divulge additional personal information. All correspondence to and from a child will be retained by the EdEquity moderator, and we will provide access to the available information regarding a child under 13 years of age if her or his parent so requests.

How Information Is Used
Postings to the EdEquity listserv are archived and can be accessed by the public. These postings include the name and e-mail address of the person who posted the message. The moderator of EdEquity will suppress the last name and e-mail address of postings we know or suspect to be from children under the age of 13. Any information we collect from children is used strictly within our project to facilitate online discussions on topics related to educational equity. The information is shared among the participants in the project and project staff. We ask teachers and group coordinators to keep children’s contact information private. The information is not disclosed to third parties.

Parental Rights
The parents of any child participating in an EdEquity dialogue can review the child’s personal information at any time, ask in writing to have it deleted, and refuse to allow any further collection or use of the child’s information by contacting the WEEA staff.
