I'm afraid we will find out very, very little from the California
single-sex academy "experiment." The reason is that students volunteer to
attend those schools. Once you have this self-selection, you have fatally
contaminated the single-sex variable. For example, it's easy to imagine
that girls who are more academically inclined to begin with would be more
attracted to an all-girls school because of its reputation for academics.
Comparing these girls to all other girls at coed schools, many of whom are
not academically inclined, wouldn't be a valid comparison.
