The Event
The FIFA Women's World Cup is the world championship of women's soccer. It is
the counterpart to the men's tournament that was held in the United States in
1994 and in France in 1998.
Participants
Sixteen (16) of the best international women's soccer teams in the world. Over
70 nations will compete from August 1997 to December 1998 to qualify for the
1999 Women's World Cup. The United States, as a host, gains an automatic berth
into the field of 16.
China, Japan, North Korea, Brazil, Nigeria, Ghana, Canada, Italy, Sweden,
Norway, Denmark, Russia, Germany, Australia and Mexico are the other fifteen
qualifiers.

Format
In the First Round, the 16 teams will be divided into four groups of
four teams. Each team will play the other teams in its group. The top two
teams from each group will advance to the Quarterfinal Round. Beginning
with the Quarterfinals, the tournament will be single-elimination.
