NEW POLL HIGHLIGHTS CONNECTION BETWEEN ANTI-GAY, RACIST
ATTITUDES IN SCHOOLS AND STUDENT-ON-STUDENT VIOLENCE
"These findings strongly suggest that countering anti-gay bias
and racism in the classroom goes hand in hand with countering
violence in schools. You can't have one without the other." -
GLSEN Executive Director Kevin Jennings
NEW YORK, NEW YORK (21 MAY 1999) -
The article describes results of a A new Gallup Poll
linking anti-gay and racist attitudes with student-on-student
violence.
Fifty-eight percent of high school students affirmed that 'violence-prone'
groups could be dangerous to gay students, 50 percent have heard these groups
espouse 'hatred of gays.' Fifty-one percent also said
'violence-prone' groups could be dangerous to black, Hispanic or
other students of color.
