This position offers a unique leadership opportunity to direct the only
state agency dedicated solely to improving the lives of women and girls in
California. This is an exempt position.
The Commission
The California Commission on the Status of Women is an independent,
non-partisan, state agency established in 1965 with the directive to study,
recommend, and advise the Governor and the Legislature on inequities in
laws, practices and conditions that affect women. In its 36-year history,
the Commission has examined and supported public policy development in many
areas concerning California women and their families?civil rights; legal
rights in marriage and divorce; sex equity in education; discrimination in
employment, insurance, and credit; sexual harassment; domestic violence and
sexual assault; access to health care; reproductive freedom; child and
other dependent care; pay inequities and comparable worth; social security
and pensions.
The Commission is comprised of 17 members: 9 public members, 6 legislative
members and 2 statutory members. The Commission is funded through the State
General Fund and is staffed by 5 full-time employees, including the
Executive Director.
The Position
Based on policy direction from Commissioners, the Executive Director is
responsible for the executive and administrative duties of the Commission.
In this capacity, the Director supervises and directs staff in carrying out
program and fiscal responsibilities and manages all matters with the
jurisdiction of the Commission and its mandate.
Duties
Plan, develop, and implement short and long-term action plans related to
the Commission's public policy agenda.
Report and make recommendations to the Commission on policy issues.
Plan and staff Commission meetings.
Serve as spokesperson and liaison for the Commission to the Governor, the
Legislature and state and local agencies, including local commissions on
the status of women.
Manage and supervise staff responsible for coordination of the
Commission's policy and administrative functions, including legislation,
public information and referral, contract and fiscal services, and special
projects.
Desirable Qualifications
Experience in high-level administrative and public policy functions
related to the administration of a state agency, including knowledge of
the state legislative and budget process.
Ability to analyze complex problems, recommend a course of action, and
develop and implement short and long-range plans to achieve the
Commission's goals and objectives.
Leadership and organizational development skills as a manager and
supervisor.
Knowledge and understanding of women's issues and a commitment to the
goals and objectives of the Commission.
Ability to develop and sustain collaborative working relationships with
other state agencies, organizations and individuals serving California's
women and girls.
Excellent communication skills and a demonstrated history of ethics in
business.
Salary and Benefits
Salary range: $5923 - $6405 per month. Benefits include: retirement;
deferred compensation plans; medical, dental and vision coverage; sick
leave, vacation, and state holidays.
