What is the source for the "70 cents" statistic? How old is it? I've heard
that this "fact" was produced by a feminist woman's group in the seventies.
I also understand that as an aggregate which compares all working women
with all working men, it was never adjusted for relevant variables such as
experience and years of service. Further, I understand, that even
unadjusted, the relative "wage gap" is now closer to 84% than the 70% which
is so frequently used. What is of particular concern to me is that so many
I've heard use this figure have no idea either of its source or underlying
assumptions. As such, it is of little value as substantive basis of
discussion.
