Gender Equality in International Development

From: khanson@edc.org
Date: Tue Apr 18 2000 - 16:29:50 EDT

The Advisory Committee on Voluntary Foreign Aid (ACVFA) invites you to
attend an important meeting on achieving gender equality in international
development. This full-day, interactive meeting will bring together members
of the public and private sectors to discuss the environment for gender
equality - what has been achieved and what challenges remain.

The meeting is being held in cooperation with The President's
Interagency Council on Women. Several leading non-governmental
organizations
involved in women's issues are co-sponsoring the event, including the
Association for Women in Development (AWID), Center for Development and
Population Activities (CEDPA), International Center for Research on Women
(ICRW), U.S. Women Connect, Women's Edge, Women's Environment and
Development
Organization (WEDO), InterAction's Commission on the Advancement of Women,
and the Women's Foreign Policy Group.

A keynote address, "Globalization and Feminization: An Agenda for
Gender and Development," by Lincoln Chen, Vice President of The Rockefeller
Foundation, will set the stage for this participatory meeting. A morning
panel, "Institutionalizing Gender Equality," will present James Michel,
United States Agency for International Development (USAID); Theresa Loar,
President's Interagency Council on Women; George Alleyne, Pan American
Health
Organization; Mayra Buvinic, Inter-American Development Bank; and Gita
Gopal,
The World Bank. The morning session will also feature a presentation of the
independent assessment
of USAID's Gender Plan of Action (GPA), developed jointly by USAID and
ACVFA.

An afternoon panel, "Committing Resources to Advance Gender
Equality,"
will feature Bradford Smith, The Ford Foundation; Anastasia
Posadskaya-Vanderbeck, the Soros Foundation; Mary Ann Stein, the Moriah
Fund;
and a representative of the MacArthur Foundation. Afternoon dialogues with
members of both panels will culminate in practical strategies for realizing
further advancements in gender equality. Attendees are invited to a
reception featuring the presentation of ACVFA's Congressional Leadership
Awards immediately following the meeting.

Established by presidential directive after World War II, the ACVFA
is
an expert, non-governmental body that advises the U.S. government on the
relationship between the voluntary sector and the official foreign affairs
community. ACVFA members are appointed by the USAID Administrator and are
selected for their knowledge of private voluntary organizations and
international development. The quarterly public meetings serve as forums
for
consultation between the public and private sectors.
