Craig is absolutely right about the purpose of these resources--they are
part of an overall series of books and videos intended to reach students of
different ethnic backgrounds and offer them opportunities to learn more
about their life choices, build their self-esteem and help them learn about
their cultural heritage and also about a large number of role models. All
the books, along with some workbooks, videos, and other resources, were
produced under the auspices of the California Department of Education using
the Perkins Vocational Sex Equity funds (which were discontinued in 1999)
and under the guidance of my predecessor Connie Gipson. We're glad several
of the publications will last long after the program as ended.

Encuentros and Generations have not yet been released--Encuentros should
be available early next year and we expect Generations (for Native
American students, both boys and girls) will be published later in 2001.
However, Visions and Options are currently available, as are Images for
African-American girls and Mariposa for Latina girls.

The currently available books (and the other two, once they are published)
may be ordered through CDE Press, part of the California Department of
Education. You may either check online at www.cde.ca.gov/cdepress or call
them at 1-800-995-4099 from 8 am-4:30 pm PST Monday through Friday. They
can also send you a catalog or you can reference the online catalog.

We eventually hope to have additional resources available through CDE Press
and to reactivate our SERVE Library of print and video resources in
vocational education gender equity and related equity topics, including
issues relevant to boys and issues relating to race as well as gender. We
also plan to have a gender equity section on the California Department of
Education website (www.cde.ca.gov) sometime early next year--all additional
information on the resources available will be on the website.

I hope that's been a help--thanks, Craig, for mentioning it in the
dialogue.
