The comments in this online conference remind me to continue to do what I
already love to in my role as a teacher- listen to and respond to the
hearts and minds of my students. Although it seems that some research
paints bleak
pictures of what is happening for immigrant girls in some communities- and
these realities need to be responded to by educators , politicians,
families and communities- I would like to end on a note of hope. As I said
in an
earlier comment I see many of the young immigrant girls (Cape Verdean,
Brazilian, Hispanic, Haitian) in my classes speaking the language of goals,
achievement and an eye on their "own" future with admirable fluency. When I
hear this I know that my work is to find ways to support them maintain that
fluency and perhaps acquire more.
