In response to Bill Oetjen's question about how to illustrate the need for
gender equity in the classroom . . . I don't have a good "sound bite", but
you may want to look at our fact sheet "Opening the Door to Economic
Security: Making Career Education Programs Work for Women and Girls" --
it
has a lot of data about women and girls' participation in traditionally
male
and technological fields, the barriers they face in these classrooms, and
the impact it has on their future economic security. It's available on the
web at http://www.nwlc.org/pdf/CareerEdfactsone.pdf. I hope it helps!

Hi folks,

I'm an 8th grade teacher in a medium-sized middle and high school in
Vermont. As one of a very few teachers here who have been trying to raise
awareness of gender equity issues in the classroom, I have been asked to
give a brief introduction and give a "pitch" for GE at an in-service
just before school begins this year.

The audience will include middle and high school faculty, administration
and some board members. I am concerned that there may be entrenched
resistance to the idea. One indicator came this summer when, during a
chat about it, one of my fellow teachers said "but we already have a
sexual harassment policy."

I need a good sound bite or grabber that will quickly demonstrate the
need, for our attention on this.

Thanks,
Bill Oetjen
