Schott Gender Equity Mini-Grant Program (1999-2000)
Guidelines and Application

The Caroline and Sigmund Schott Foundation is soliciting proposals to support
efforts to cultivate gender-inclusive learning environments for girls and boys
in the Boston and Cambridge public schools. This program will honor girls and
boys of diverse backgrounds, break down traditional gender roles and barriers,
and expand opportunities so that all students will achieve their fullest
potential. School-based pairs or teams are strongly encouraged. The one-year
program will provide educators with:

    1. A $3,000 mini-grant per person
    2. Professional development opportunities
    3. Networking and team-teaching opportunities
    4. Curricula resources

About the Caroline and Sigmund Schott Foundation
The Caroline and Sigmund Schott Foundation is interested in supporting urban
public schools in cultivating “gender healthy” classrooms and programs. The
Schott Foundation believes that efforts to achieve gender-fair schools will
result in equity and excellence for all children. This Gender Equity Mini-Grant
Program is part of a long-term interest by the Schott Foundation to create a
statewide network of gender equity activists in public school communities.

Purpose
The purpose of the Schott Gender Equity Mini-Grant Program is to stimulate and
support interest by teachers, counselors, administrators, and parent groups to
address gender, race, and other equity issues. Research has shown that gender
bias, discrimination, and sexism permeate school settings. Gender bias and
other forms of biased attitudes and behaviors, whether subtle or obvious, affect
teaching practices, curricular materials, classroom culture, and school
policies, and have a harmful impact on all children.

It is the Schott Foundation’s hope that these grants will encourage and support
innovation in teaching and learning, integrate issues of equity into classrooms
and schools, and contribute to safe and healthy school climates. This program is
aimed at improving school policies and academic achievement.

As you develop your proposal, please keep in mind the following items that are
important to the Schott Foundation:
- Your vision for cultural change in classrooms and schools, including a
description of the intended impact on children and/or youth
- Exploration of interconnections between gender, race, and class
- School-based teams or school and after-school/community partnerships
- Diversity of individuals applying
- Inclusive and/or interdisciplinary in learning style and/or materials
- Proactive educational programs that foster a strong multicultural classroom
respectful of all students, regardless of gender, race, ability, sexual
orientation, or income

The Foundation hopes that this grant will help you to do work you’ve always
wanted to do but didn’t have the funds to pursue. Your project may address:
- Professional development training and/or consulting support
- Co-educational or gender-specific programming with students
- Youth-led programs
- Teaching practices or curriculum development
- School-wide institutional change efforts

NOTE: These are only suggestions; please feel free to propose other work.
