Description: The Welfare and Reform and Children Study is a multi-method
research study of low income women and their young children. In Boston, we
will follow 20 African American families over several years, to better
understand the effects of welfare reform on their lives. An equal number of
Puerto Rican, and white (non-immigrant) families will also be studied. We
are looking for several field workers who will each work with five families
intensively over approximately 18 months to 2 years . Field workers will
conduct in-depth interviews and observations with families in their homes,
at child care, on social service visits, etc. They will tape record interviews,
write up detailed field notes using a computer, and document changes in family
circumstances.
Applicants should have knowledge of issues facing low income families and
children; experience with qualitative research, home visiting, or extended
interviewing of low income families; good word processing and writing skills and
knowledge of Boston communities; use of an automobile; and interest in working
as part of a research team. Training in project-specific research skills will be
provided.
