I have long suspected that the revenue generating ability of male sports,
especially football, have been exaggerated. In a recent Chronicle of
Higher Education (two to four months ago) there was an article and booke
review done about just that topic. the author, and economics professor,
came to the conclusion that except for maybe the top ten football schools
in the country, teams are a finacial drain in strictly balance sheet
terms. I've always wanted to see what goes into the cost columns because
of the high cost of athletic facilites and physical plant upkeep.

I do know that in Hawaii, the women's volleyball team--a stable
winner--generates huge amounts of local support, enthusiasm, and good
will/publicity.
