WEEA Grantee Named 2002 Texas State Professor of
the Year
As a WEEA grantee, Dr. Tinajero directs the Educational Enhancement
for Mothers and Daughters Program at the University of Texas--El Paso.
This WEEA project addresses two major barriers to Latinas' participation
in higher education: low educational and career expectations of girls
and their parents, and lack of knowledge about how to prepare for,
finance, and succeed in college. Since 1986, the project has worked
with over 3,000 mothers and daughters. Project staff has responded
to requests throughout the country from people interested in using
their program model to establish similar programs. As the program
founder, Dr. Tinajero has built lasting partnerships with six such
replicated programs in Texas and California.
Dr. Tinajero was selected by the Carnegie Foundation as the 2002
Texas State Professor of the Year based on four criteria: (1) impact
on and involvement with undergraduate students, (2) scholarly approach
to teaching and learning, (3) contributions to undergraduate education
within the institution and community, and (4) support from colleagues
and students.
