WEEA Program | WEEA Staff | What is gender equity? The WEEA Equity Resource
Center Since we were established under the Women's Educational Equity Act, our Center has played a key role in the success of the legislation. While Title IX was designed to end discrimination, WEEA was designed to build a gender-equity infrastructure on the local and national levels that both supports Title IX and creates models of gender-fair education. Unlike many other funding sources, WEEA provides two critical components that have made it particularly effective--technical assistance to the grantees and national dissemination of their models. The WEEA Center has provided this technical assistance in many forms, ranging from reviewing project designs and providing workshops on technology to working closely with grantees to develop and publish a wide range of materials. This dual role has helped build and sustain a national network of educators skilled in conceptualizing and implementing gender-equitable education. Through the materials developed and disseminated nationally, individual project learning is not lost but rather shared and built upon. The Center remains the central repository of information about the grants and their products, and it draws on these for ongoing technical assistance. Finally, the Center is continually incorporating new technologies as a way of reaching new audiences for gender equity, ensuring that new projects have access to what works and why. Serving as a bridge between theory and practice, we work with educators in formal and informal education, reaching across the entire lifespan; we provide training and consultation, conduct research, and market hundreds of gender-fair multicultural education products developed by educators in classrooms, universities, and community organizations.
The Center's staff bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the design and implementation of Center activities. We collaborate with national organizations and other federally funded technical assistance providers, including the Equity Assistance Centers, Comprehensive Centers, clearinghouses, and labs, to ensure a comprehensive, integrated system that focuses on increasing options and outcomes for all students. Through our WEEA Associates, we provide onsite and online training and consultation. Our website and discussion list both offer materials, mentoring, and other resources. We provide free display and informational materials to conferences and workshops. The WEEA Center is funded through a contract from the WEEA Program Office at the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Elementary and Secondary Education. We are a project at Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC) in Newton, Massachusetts.
